An Indonesian basketball prospect is about to blaze a trail for his country in the sport.

Derrick Michael Xzavierro will join the NBA Global Academy at Basketball Australia’s (BA) Centre of Excellence at the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.

The 6-foot-8 Xzavierro is the first Indonesian to be part of an NBA Academy.

“I’m extremely excited to join NBA Global Academy to learn from the coaches and train alongside some of the best high school-age basketball players in the world,” said Xzavierro.

“This is a great opportunity for me to continue my development and take the next step in becoming a better player and leader.”

The NBA Global Academy provides top-notch basketball training program to high school prospects outside the United States.

“Derrick is a top prospect coming out of Indonesia who will fit seamlessly into our program,” said NBA Global Academy Technical Director Marty Clarke. “We look forward to helping Derrick develop and prepare for the next level.”

The 18-year-old Xzavierro has already made his debut for the Indonesian men’s national team in the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers.

Xzavierro, though, did not play when Gilas Pilipinas beat Indonesia, 100-70, in February 2020.
