MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos celebrated Yuka Saso’s historic win in the US Women’s Open golf championship on Monday and the teen star made sure to return the favor.
The 19-year-old Saso, the first Filipino to win the prestigious tournament, couldn’t be more grateful for the support she received throughout her campaign.
“I’m just thankful that there’s so many people in the Philippines cheering for me,” Saso said after her victory, as per Reuters.
“I don’t know how to thank them. They gave me so much energy. I want to say thank you to everyone.”
Saso, the 2018 Asian Games double gold medalist, also got a boost from the fans at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California which has a large Filipino population.
“It felt great. There’s so many people holding up Philippines flags, and it’s really big,” she said. “It made me really happy.”
