MANILA, Philippines—Cris Nievarez ended his first Summer Games with a 23rd overall finish in the men’s single sculls in the rowing competition of the Tokyo Olympics Friday at Sea Forest Waterway.
The 21-year-old Filipino bet clocked in with a time of 7:21.28 to finish fifth in Finals D, the classification race for the 19th to 24th places.
Nievarez bowed out of the medal race last Sunday, but he’s soaking up all the experience he could get as he looks forward to qualifying for the Paris 2024 Games.
“This is a big step for me and a big reason why I should strive better to qualify for Paris,” said Nievarez in Filipino previously.
Kazakhstan’s Vladislav Yakovlev finished first in Finals D, 19th overall, at 7:03.37 while Peter Purcell-Gilpin of Zimbabwe came in at second, 20th overall, at a close 7:03.85.
Turkey’s Onat Kazakli was third in Finals D, 21st overall at 7:13.65 with Iraq’s Mohammed Al Khafaji finishing behind him two full seconds later.
Husein Alireza of Saudi Arabia finished 24th overall with a time of 7:52.67.
