MANILA, Philippines—EJ Obiena took a leap in the right direction in his path to Paris 2024 after he set a new Philippine standard in the IAAF Diamond League recently.
Obiena soared to a personal best 5.91 meters to seize the silver medal in the same city where the next Summer Olympics will take place.
The 25-year-old Tokyo Olympian relived his best performance yet on his Instagram account Monday.
World record holder and Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis of Switzerland claimed the gold after clearing 6.01m.
As of last week, Obiena remains sixth in the Men’s Pole Vault World Rankings. He is just 15 points behind No. 5 Piotr Lisek of Poland.
