Hidilyn Diaz ‘humbled’ by Halloween tributes

MANILA, Philippines — Most families all over the world were clad in numbered green track jackets and red jumpsuits with masks amid the Squid Game craze on Halloween.

In the Philippines, several kids dressed up as the country’s pride Hidilyn Diaz, the first Filipino Olympic gold medalist, during Halloween.

Diaz, who claimed the top prize in the women’s 55kg class in weightlifting at the Tokyo Games last July, felt honored by the tribute which include the daughter of celebrities Anne Curtis and Erwan Heussaff, Dahlia.

“I’m humbled by your tribute to me,” Diaz wrote on Instagram.

“Naging instrument lang po ako para magbigay ng karangalan sa ating bansa,” she added. “Mas mahalaga ang pagbuhat natin ang sarili nating responsibilidad – Hindi lang para sa ating sarili kundi para sa ating kapwa at bayan.”

(I just became an instrument to be able to give honor to our country. What’s more important is us being able to carry our responsibilities not just for ourselves but for others and the country.)

That’s exactly how Curtis described Diaz, who is an inspiration to many, especially to Filipino kids.

“@hidilyndiaz inspiring the youth that with hard work and perseverance you can achieve your biggest/heaviest dreams 🦋🏋🏽‍♀️,” the actress posted.
