MANILA, Philippines — Filipino karateka Jamie Lim bowed out of gold medal contention but will fight for the bronze in the World Karate Federation Senior World Championships 2021 on Wednesday in Dubai.

Competing in a lower weight class, Lim lost to Ukraine’s Anita Serogina, 2-1, in the fourth round and was relegated to the repechage where she has a chance to salvage a spot on the podium on Thursday.

Serogina, a Tokyo Olympian, was also a gold medalist in the 2019 European Games. She also bagged the bronze in the 2016 World Championships.

“Ukraine goes to the finals our very own Jamie Lim will fight for repechage for bronze medal!” Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation Inc. wrote on its Facebook page Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Lim beat Russia’s Alana Kochieva, 4-2, to kick off her maiden campaign at the world championships in the female kumite -61kg class.

She then hurdled Xhunashi Caballero of Mexico and Sarara Shimada of Japan in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Lim, daughter of PBA legend Samboy Lim, is the reigning Southeast Asian Games karate champion in +61kg class.
