MANILA, Philippines—Rising star Carlo Paalam has a bright future ahead of him in his boxing career. But as early as now, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist has started to secure his future outside the ring.
Paalam received a cash windfall following his stunning performance in the Olympics last August and he’s making sure that his hard earned money won’t go to waste.
The 23-year-old flyweight has put up a two-story commercial building with his own mini grocery in his hometown of Cagayan De Oro City, where he and his family have resided since he was little.
Paalam, who used to be a scavenger in landfills in Cagayan De Oro as a kid due to poverty, shared the fruits of his labor on his social media account.
“Another hard work earned,” Paalam, who is also a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, posted.
The Bukidnon-born Paalam was one of four Filipinos who medaled at the Tokyo Games.
