MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines ended its losing spell to Thailand after stunning the regional powerhouse, 1-0, in Group B of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Friday at D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India.

It was a streak ender of the highest drama as Chandler McDaniel scored the match’s lone goal in the 81st minute as her screamer crossed the line after Thai goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing fumbled the initial save.

The Philippines’ victory ended a stretch of 13 straight losses against Thailand in the two sides’ head-to-head matchups.

With its first win in the bag, the Filipinos are now tied with Australia atop Group B at 1-0-0 (win-loss-draw).

Debutant Katrina Guillou could’ve given the Philippines its first goal of the match early in the first half but her attempt was disallowed after it was flagged for offside.

The Philippines will next face Australia on Monday at Mumbai Football Arena.

Sam Kerr led Australia to an 18-0 thrashing of Indonesia in their opener with the squad captain netting five goals to become the country’s all-time international leading scorer.

The Chelsea striker upped her international tally to 54 goals surpassing Australian legend Tim Cahill’s previous record of 51 for both men’s and women’s competitions.
