San Miguel draws first blood in ABL semis, downs Malaysia

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Beermen outlasted Westports Malaysia Dragons, 111-104, in overtime to get a 1-0 edge in the best-of-three semifinals of the Asean Basketball League Saturday at the Olivarez Gym in Parañaque.

Import Duke Crews and top MVP candidate Leo Avenido came up with big shots in extra time, giving the Beermen a five point breather en route to the crucial win before shifting the series Kuala Lumpur.

Crews had 25 points, while Avenido, who struggled in the first half, finished with 17 points.

Chris Banchero picked the right time to play his best game of the season, handing out 18 points, 15 assists and six steals for San Miguel.

The Beermen, who evened the match up with Dragons this year, 2-2, spoiled compatriot Patrick Cabahug’s stellar showing of 24 points.

The Dragons even held the advantage, keeping the Beermen at bay for the entire regulation but were unable to take over in overtime.

KL’s import Brian Williams had a brilliant performance with 32 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists but in a losing cause.
