MANILA, Philippines—University of the Philippines continued its torrid start with a hard-fought win over University of Santo Tomas, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
Jewel Encarnacion and Alyssa Bertolano formed a deadly one-two punch for the Fighting Maroons with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
UP notched its third victory in as many games but not after fending off a tough UST side spearheaded by Eya Laure.
“It was not an easy game. UST is a very, very strong team. They’re very experienced and they have a good coaching staff who know how to read the game,” said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu.
“It’s a win, yes, but it wasn’t easy for us. we really had to work hard for it. I hope the girls will continue fighting the same way.”
Laure fired a game-high 28 points but couldn’t draw enough support from her teammates as the Golden Tigresses fell to 2-1.
