HANOI — Three-time champion wushu Agatha Wong suffered a shocking upset on Saturday — the first of the missed gold medals for Team Philippines — but true to her sport the young model-athlete took it with grace and charm.

“I’m still very grateful,” said the 23-year-old Wong. “With only two months of training (because of the pandemic), I was not expecting anything at all. I’m grateful also because they chose me for the national team.

Dressed in purple get-up adorned with intricate pattern, Wong performed what many thought as a “safe routine,” almost perfectly to get 9.69 points.

Unfortunately, Indonesian Alisya Mellynar opted for a more daring routine and garnered 9.71 points to snatch the gold medal in the women’s taijiquan (no weapon) at Cau Giay Gymnasium.

“I just tried not to commit mistakes, as long as I don’t make mistake in my routine, I’m okay with it,” added Wong.

She will take the stage once again on Sunday in the women’s taijijian (with weapons) which she ruled during the 2019 edition in the Philippines.

Jones Inso grabbed a bronze in the men’s taijijian, following his silver-medal output during Friday’s men’s taijiquan.
