HANOI — Agatha Wong redeemed herself on Sunday displaying a form fitting for a three-time champion that she is as she ruled the wushu women’s taijijian in the 31st Southeast Asian Games here.

The 23-year-old Filipinao displayed pureness and balance using a sword, an event she won in 2019. Her routine proved undeniable for the judges amid strong performances from two hometown bets who settled for silver and bronzes, respectively.

Wong, who could only win silver in taijiquan, scored 9.71 points to best Huyan Tran Thi (9.70) and Trang Tran Thi (9.69).

It was the first gold for the Philippines in the sport that was a traditional medal source for the country.

Sanda (combat) will be played later in the afternoon with defending champion Divine Wally (48kg) leading the Filipinos’ charge.
