MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University Cheering Squad rocked the 2022 UAAP Cheerdance Competition to finally end a 13-year championship drought on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

FEU Cheering Squad, which settled for back-to-back runner-up finishes in the past two seasons, got over the hump with a rock n’ roll inspired performance for its first championship since 2009.

The Tamaraws hardly missed a beat from a two-year pandemic break and displayed excellence amid the new normal competition, which was limited to only 15 performers and a three-minute performance without the presence of the drummers.

Adamson PEP Squad, the 2017 champion, placed second with its western country-themed cheerdance.

FEU also ended National University PEP Squad’s three-year reign.

The NU PEP Squad, which ruled six of the last seven seasons, turned back the clock with its 90s-inspired performance. But it only settled for a bronze finish.

“We’ve been runner-up for the past years. Finally, we won a title. The preparation was so hard. 15 people and three minutes. If six minutes was short, what more for this three-minute performance. We could also do more with 25 people,” said said FEU head coach Randell San Gregorio in Filipino. “As they say, the struggle is real. We’re just so happy that finally we got over the hump,”

FEU danced to the music of Queen and won the hearts of the 12,522 crowd and ranked No.1 in every scoring department with a total of 727.5. points

The Cheering Squad scored 91.5 in tumbling, 93 in stunts, 90.5 in tosses, 91 in pyramids, 361.5 in dance and had no any penalties and deductions in its clean routine.

FEU brought home the grand prize of Php 50,000 and a special award worth Php 40,000.

Adamson PEP Squad garnered 688.5 points and had no deductions for the Php 30,000 cash prize, while NU PEP Squad scored 681 with six-point deduction as its dynasty ended with Php 20,000 and a special award worth Php 40,000.

University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe finished fourth pace for the third straight season with 618 points after its latin-themed performance. University of the East danced to Britney Spears songs, placing fifth with 592.5 points.

University of the Philippines PEP Squad finished sixth with 582.5 points for its K-Pop-inspired performance, while De La Salle Animo Squad’s Lady Gaga-themed performance (567.5) and Ateneo Blue Eagles’ Abba dance (488.5) placed last.
