Gilas Youth off to blistering start in Fiba U16 Asian Championship

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas Youth got contributions from top to bottom as it steamrolled Kuwait, 82-45, in the Fiba U16 Asian Championship early Tuesday at Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar.

Filipino-Canadian Zain Mahmood led all scorers with 16 points but it was Jared Bahay who set the tone for the young Nationals.

Bahay did most of his damage in the opening quarter where Gilas zoomed to a commanding 25-9 lead. He finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

FEATURED STORIES

Jacob Bayla and Kristian Porter each added 10 points for Gilas, which plays Japan later at 8:45 p.m. Both the Philippines and Japan are 1-0 in Group C.

Gilas’ defense was also on cue with 17 steals while also forcing 29 turnovers that led to 28 points.

Kuwait was also limited to just 30 percent shooting from the field.
