Ukraine’s Daria Snigur pulled off a stunning 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 upset of seventh seed Simona Halep of Romania in the first round of the US Open in New York.

Snigur bounced back from a brutal second set, winning 5 of 5 net points in the third in addition to 15 of 23 points on her first serve (65.2 percent) to edge the two-time Grand Slam champion.

It was an emotional win for Snigur, who had a Ukrainian ribbon pinned to her chest to support her home country, which is still in the midst of a war with Russia.

“I’m very, very, very nervous but I tried to do my best,” Snigur said. “For Ukraine, for my family … I want to say, thank you all.”
