MANILA, Philippines—Despite losing a key player in Rhenz Abando, the Letran Knights remain confident they can compete at a high-level come Season 98.
The Knights’ athletic director, Fr. Vic Calvo, O.P., expressed his optimism that the defending champions still have what it takes to defend their NCAA title.
“Rhenz was truly an important part for Letran but he is only a part. At the end of the day, team effort is what matters,” Calvo said.
Along with the Rookie-MVP, Letran also lost the services of Jeo Ambohot, Ato Ular and Allen Mina, who are all now in the PBA.
Abando, who committed to pro-South Korean team Anyang KGC in July, averaged 15.11 points, 6.67 rebounds, 1.89 assists, and 1.44 blocks last season during the Knights’ 19th basketball championship run.
“I’m actually fine it happened early, at least we had time to adjust,” Calvo said.
Without naming names, the NCAA managing committee member hinted at a possible star coming in for the Knights.
“He will have a replacement, a better one.”
Letran will begin its bid for a three-peat on Sept. 14 against Jose Rizal University.
The Knights were originally set to play the season’s first game but were delayed due to some players undergoing health protocols.
