MANILA, Philippines—Lyceum unloaded a late rally to beat San Beda, 89-81, in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Saturday.
The Pirates went on a 10-3 run in the last four minutes of the game to hand the Red Lions their second loss in three games.
“Even in training, we’re already preparing ourselves that even if the lead is too big, we stick to our gameplay. Our discipline paid off today when we didn’t give up,” Gyle Montaño said.
The Red Lions were up, 81-78, in the fourth quarter before Claude Guadaña equalized the game with a triple, 81-all.
Montaño sank a second straight triple to give the Pirates the lead then Shawn Umali converted a contested shot for an 86-81 cushion with 1:46 left.
Montaño finished the game with 18 points while Enoch Valdez added 17. Umali and John Barba ended with 14 and 12, respectively for Lyceum, which climbed to 2-1.
San Beda had five double-digit scorers led by JB Bahio’s 19. Damie Cuntapay had 16 while James Kwekuteye scattered 15 points for the third straight game. Peter Alfaro and Tony Ynot had 13 and 10 to their names.
