Marcus Weathers, San Miguel Beer’s reinforcement for the season-ending Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup, arrived way ahead of the pack.
And he knows exactly what that means for him and the vaunted club.
“I [was] super excited that they wanted to bring me early so I could be acclimated,” he told reporters on his way out of Philsports Arena in Pasig, on the heels of his new teammates’ thrashing of Terrafirma, 131-103, last Wednesday.
“Though I’m still shaking the jet lag off,” he added with a smile. “I gotta get used to being a whole day ahead. Sometimes, I wake up at 3 in the morning wide awake. But workouts and practices have been good so far.”
The 6-foot-5 American import, who last played in the US NCAA, said he has been enjoying getting to know his teammates.
“Practices have been good. I’ve been learning as much as I can, trying to soak up as much as I can from seeing their style of play, how the guys play,” he said.
Weathers coming in early should be beneficial for the Beermen, who could be gunning for the final gem of a Grand Slam by the time the third conference opens.
Import fit had been the powerhouse crew’s bane in recent seasons. San Miguel had two import changes in the last Governors’ Cup, resulting in a see-saw campaign that pitted them against twice-to-beat Meralco in the quarterfinals.
The Beermen eventually lost that series despite the scoring prowess of Shabazz Muhammad.
Weathers said he knows a bit of San Miguel’s rich history in the pioneering pro league, which is why he is looking to give it all come game time.
