MANILA, Philippines-After asserting himself in the floor exercise, Carlos Yulo capped a scintillating output at the 15th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Doha, Qatar with a pair of medals.
Yulo clinched a silver medal in the parallel bars and claimed a bronze in the vault, two events where the Tokyo Olympian normally winds up climbing the podium.
A former world champion in the vault, the 4-foot-11 dynamo registered 14.966 on his first attempt highlighted by a handspring front double pike, which netted 9.366 on execution following a flawless landing.
Yulo’s second vault saw him flying on a Kasamatsu double twist, but reaching the floor was far from perfect, giving the Filipino 14.800 and ending up 14.883 on average.
Artur Davtyan, the reigning world champion from Armenia, topped the event with a Dragulescu on his initial vault and followed it up with handspring Randi, a two-and-half twist, pushing his combined efforts to 15.083.
Igor Radivilov of Ukraine placed second with both attempts averaging 14.899.
Yulo punctuated the medal rush in the parallel bars when he compiled a total of 14.933, good for second place behind Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun, who claimed the gold with 14.966. The bronze medal went to Ferhat Arican of Turkiye (14.733).
Next stop for Yulo is the third leg of the World Cup series in Baku, Azerbaijan on March 9-12 before wrapping it up on the fourth and final phase in Cairo on April 27-30.
This year’s World Cup series is a qualifier for the apparatus events in the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Sept. 30-Oct. 8, which offers spots to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
