UAAP: NU avenges Lady Bulldogs’ loss with La Salle sweep in men’s volleyball
MANILA, Philippines—The National University Bulldogs gained redemption of sorts after sweeping La Salle, 25-21, 25-21, 25-16, on Wednesday to remain unblemished at the end of the first round of the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.
NU drew extra motivation from the Lady Bulldogs’ straight-set defeat to the La Salle Lady Spikers earlier.
The victory extended the Bulldogs’ winning run to 25 games dating back to Seasn 81.
“I saw them crying while entering their dugout. I talked to some of them and said we will win it for them. I was so motivated to bounce back for them,” Buddin said in Filipino.
“I also wanted to help my team because in the past few games, I think I didn’t contribute. After seven games, I finally got my rhythm.”
Rookie spiker Michaelo Buddin unleashed 19 points built on 14 attacks, three blocks, and an ace to go with 12 excellent receptions as the Bulldogs improved to 7-0 in the season.
Ken Malinis was also a big factor with 16 points. Nico Almendras added nine markers, while setter Joshua Retamar had 22 excellent sets, seven digs, and four points including three blocks.
“We’re one family here in NU. We want NU volleyball to reach a higher level in all divisions. I told my players that we have to avenge their loss so we will have a good performance,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin in Filipino.
“We prepared for this game because our goal was to sweep the first round. We hope to sustain it in the second round.”
La Salle finished the round with a 4-3 record as JM Ronquillo paced the team with 17 points, while Noel Kampton was a marked man and only finished with four markers.
