MANILA, Philippines—Defending champion National University reasserted its mastery over La Salle, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16, to extend its run to eight victories in as many matches in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament, Saturday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Michaelo Buddin sustained his fine play with 17 points built on 14 spikes, two blocks, and one service ace as the Bulldogs beat the Green Spikers three days after their first-round duel.

Ken Malinis chipped in 13 points, including two blocks, while setter Joshua Retamar dished out 19 excellent sets as NU remained unbeaten in eight games and extended its winning streak to 26 games.

“We were able to carry over our momentum from our last game against (them). We read what they were doing inside the court,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin in Filipino.

La Salle dropped its second straight game, sliding to a 4-4 record despite a 21-point effort of JM Ronquillo. Noel Kampton had 13 markers.

Meanwhile, spiker Mark Calado and setter Benny Martinez continued to be a potent combo to lead Far Eastern University past winless University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.

Martinez dished out 17 excellent sets on top of three points, as Calado nailed 12 points. Dryx Saavedra and Martin Bugaoan had eight and seven markers, respectively.

The Tamaraws rose to a 6-2 record for solo third place.

“We can’t underestimate UP. They are strong and ready to play,” FEU coach Rei Diaz said in Filipino. “They checked the team. I think it’s a good start for us but we have to be stronger. We have to stay focused and remain committed.”

The Fighting Maroons, who were paced by Louis Gamban’s nine points, suffered their eighth consecutive loss.
