MANILA, Philippines—The quest for the next Filipino world champion continues on Saturday with the latest staging of Manny Pacquiao’s Blow-by-Blow.
Super flyweight prospects Danrick Sumabong and Denmark Quibido headline a 12-fight card which takes place at Imus Sports Center in Cavite.
Sumabong (12-2-1, 9KOs) and Quibido (12-1-1, 7KOs) dispute the vacant Games and Amusements Board super flyweight title.
“As I have promised, the search continues,” said Pacquiao, who was Blow-by-Blow’s main attraction in the 90s.
The 24-year-old Sumabong, who hails from Tagbilaran, Bohol, is coming off a split draw against Japan’s Kantaro Juri in Tokyo last September. It was Sumabong’s first bout outside the country.
Meanwhile, Quibido, who resides in Tayug, Pangasinan, tries to rebound after suffering the first loss of his pro career at the hands of South African Sikho Nqothole seven months ago in Johannesburg.
A 10-rounder between RV Deniega of SanMan Boxing of General Santos City and Justine Darap of Calbayog Boxing Academy in Samar is also on tap.
“If you look at the fight program, you would see that most of the fights are scheduled for eight, six and four rounds. That is precisely the reason why we revived Blow By Blow—to look for new talent,” Pacquiao, who was Blow-By-Blow’s main star in the 1990s.
“Likewise, the fighters we sign up come from across the nation and that’s one way of discovering someone who could someday become a big star,” added Pacquiao.
