PHNOM PENH—Wushu artist Sandrex Gainsan managed to snare a bronze medal in the men’s jianshu/qiangshu on Thursday at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

Gainsan compiled 18.926 points (9.33 in jianshu and 9.59 in qiangshu) and placed third despite a well-executed routine by the reigning world junior champion.

Gainsan of Quezon City topped the qiangshu (spear play) event during the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships in Tangerang, Indonesia in December last year.

Gold medal hope Agatha Wong is running third in her pet event (women’s taijiquan/taijijian) with 9.58 points in the taijiquan.

“My opponents here are good and I do hope to catch up with the leaders in tomorrow’s (Friday) finals,’’ said Wong, who is set to perform in the taijijian event before organizers announce the medal winners.

Host Cambodia veered away from previous practices of awarding one medal per event. This time, the organizers combined two events for only a single medal.

Wong, the 2019 SEA Games champion, got two silver medals last year in the Hanoi edition from both her events.
