MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo has named Brazilian Sergio Veloso as the new head coach of its women’s volleyball team.

Veloso replaced Oliver Almadro, who had been calling the shots for the team since 2018.

“Coach Sergio takes over the head coach role for the Women’s Volleyball Team and brings with him more than 37 years of successfully forming programs and coaching young and professional volleyball players in Brazil, Maldives, and Bahrain,” the school said in a statement.

Veloso, who also serves as the Philippine national men’s volleyball team head coach, was formally introduced on Monday during a courtesy call to University president Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ.

“His championship experience as well as expertise in technical skills analysis and strategic planning will help the team prepare for their upcoming tournaments.”

Almadro steered Ateneo to a title in Season 81 but missed the Final Four last season after finishing with a 4-10 record.

Almadro also calls the shots for the Petro Gazz Angels in the Premier Volleyball League.

The school also announced that Babes Castillo has been tapped to guide its boys’ and girls’ volleyball program.

Castillo is no stranger to winning, having won multiple championships as the former coach of the National University Lady Bullpups.
