MANILA, Philippines—Former world title contender Mercito Gesta hopes to continue his resurgence against Mexican prospect William Zepeda on September 16 at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Gesta, the United States-based Filipino, aims to make it three in a row with a major upset and deal Zepeda his first loss in a 12-round lightweight bout on Mexico’s Independence Day.

“It is official that I will be fighting on September 16 vs William Zepeda at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, CA for his WBA Continental America’s Championship Belt,” posted Gesta on social media.

“It will also be live on DAZN and presented by Golden Boy Boxing promotions. Can’t wait No Mercy fans! It will be a great show for the fans everywhere!! 🇲🇽 vs. 🇵🇭”

The 35-year-old Gesta (34-3-3, 17KOs) is coming off back-to-back victories over Joel Diaz Jr. and most recently former world champion Joseph Diaz Jr. last March.

Gesta has redeemed himself since getting knocked out by Mexico’s Juan Antonio Rodriguez back in March 2019.

A stunning victory over Zepeda (28-0, 24KOs) would certainly boost Gesta’s bid for a world title shot.

Gesta had been in a couple of world title bouts but lost on both occasions.

His first crack at a major crown ended in a unanimous decision loss to Miguel Vazquez in 2012.

Six years later, Gesta found himself challenging for the WBA lightweight crown but fell short on points against three-division champion Jorge Linares.

Gesta was also scheduled to face Ryan Garcia last January but Garcia pulled out of what was supposed to be a tune-up fight prior to his showdown with Gervonta Davis.
