MANILA, Philippines—Joshua Munzon played a huge role in Northport’s most recent accomplishment in the PBA–beating Ginebra for the first time in five years.

After 14 head-to-head games, the Batang Pier finally got one over the Gin Kings, 119-116, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Philsports Arena on Wednesday.

Munzon assumed the role of main protagonist for the Batang Pier in one of their biggest wins in franchise history against the crowd darlings in front of a hostile crowd in Pasig.

NorthPort ended a five-year losing spell against Barangay Ginebra despite squandering a big lead, holding on for a 119-116 win Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Batang Pier remained on top of the standings with their seventh victory against one defeat after showing steady resolve usually displayed by traditional contenders despite wasting an 18-point defeat and losing franchise star Arvin Tolentino on six personal fouls.

Import Kadeem Jack delivered 32 points and 16 rebounds while Joshua Munzon had 27 points, including a three-pointer that put NorthPort ahead 117-109 entering the final minute of the contest.

MANILA, Philippines—In last year’s matchup between Rain or Shine and Blackwater in PBA Governors’ Cup action, George King and the Bossing obliterated Elasto Painters.

This time, Adrian Nocum and company made sure Blackwater wouldn’t repeat the same scenario as the Elasto Painters emerged victorious over the Bossing, 122-106, in the Commissioner’s Cup.

In their last meeting, Nocum only scored nine in the upset loss against the cellar dwellers, but the athletic guard this time made sure to do more with revenge in mind against the Bossing.

Adrian Nocum dropped 18 of his 22 points in the second half to emerge as among the prominent figures in the Elasto Painters’ fifth straight triumph since dropping their opening assignment in the midseason conference.

It was the third straight game Rain or Shine faced a team below .500, having beaten Magnolia and winless Terrafirma before the holiday break.

PBA: Cone looking for ways for Ginebra to have consistent, even-keel standard

Crowd darling Barangay Ginebra ushered in the new year with a masterful triumph over powerhouse San Miguel, a convincing showcase of its might that was far different from how it ended 2024, when it scored a victory with a buzzer-beating triple against Magnolia.

Yet head coach Tim Cone wasted no time comparing the manner which his squad pulled through in those contests. What’s important, he said, is staying on an even keel.

“You know—I think I said it in the last game—that every game is different, and I think we understand that as a group,” he said shortly after a 93-81 dismantling of corporate sibling Beermen at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday night.
