MANILA, Philippines — More than getting a record number of wins, Ramil De Jesus wants to leave a legacy as a coach who produced smart and disciplined players.

De Jesus opened his 27th year with La Salle in historic fashion with his 300th win— most in the UAAP by a coach– after the Lady Spikers swept the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, in the Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament opener on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

“I’m happy that I reached these many wins, but I never thought about trying to get here. I just wanted to give the kids good playing condition and performance and those were enough for me, not the number of victories,” said De Jesus, who attended his first UAAP post game in two years, in Filipino.

De Jesus said wants to be remembered as a good disciplinarian, who taught his players good things on and off the court–including proper wearing of uniforms.

“I want people to remember my players as smart and who dress well, because I’m meticulous even when it comes to uniforms,” the longtime La Salle coach said.

“Disciplined–that’s what I want people to think when they see a La Salle player because these players were under coach Ramil’s care. And whether it’s inside or outside the court, they bring that [discipline] with them.

“I always remind them that I care for them, not just inside the court, and I know they will benefit from our advice and teachings when the time comes.

Reigning UAAP MVP Angel Canino and new starting middle blocker Amie Provido were honored to deliver their coach’s 300th win.

“Amazing. I didn’t know,” Canino, who scored 14 points built on 11 attacks and three blocks, said. “But when I heard this was his 300th win, I was so happy to be a part of it. Hopefully more wins to come.”

Provido, who had eight points, also vowed to continue delivering wins for De Jesus and the Lady Spikers.
