Jeric Lopez nailed a floater while the Inquirer’s Jonas Terrado put together a strong double-double as Say Chiz edged Smart, 66-64, at the start of the 2024 Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Cup late Tuesday evening at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Lopez buried the game-winner with 39 seconds remaining while Aivan Episcope grabbed a crucial offensive rebound as the Smileys made key defensive stops to seal the PSA Cup victory.

Terrado finished with game-highs of 21 points, 14 rebounds and four steals while adding two assists and a block to lead the Smileys while Lopez finished with 16 points. Former Inquirer reporter Cedelf Tupas, who had a 61-point outing in the preseason, added 15 points.

Christian Jacinto and Aldo Avinante, meanwhile, spearheaded Capitol1 to an 86-74 rout of Strong Group Athletics in the other game of the tournament which is one of the projects of PSA president Nelson Beltran of Philippine Star.

Jacinto had 21 points and 12 rebounds while Avinante, who celebrated his 35th birthday, added 19 points for the Solar Boys, who never trailed against the Press Row Bros.
