UAAP volleyball: Xyza Gula gives UST big lift off the bench
MANILA, Philippines — After University of Santo Tomas dropped the opening set to University of the East, second-stringer Xyza Gula spelled the difference to keep the Golden Tigresses unbeaten in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament.
Aside from rookie Angge Poyos’ 24-point explosion, Gula provided the spark off the bench with 10 points as UST overcame a gritty UE side, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22, on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Gula, who proved what she’s capable of in the preseason, was a service specialist when the Tigresses stunned the NU Lady Bulldogs last Sunday.

With Jonna Perdido being limited to seven points, Gula stepped up when it mattered most.
“During the first set, I noticed that our team lacked aggressiveness. So when I had a chance to play, I tried to lift our team by enjoying the game,” she said.
Gula’s quality minutes kept UST on top with a 2-0 record tied with defending champion La Salle, which will be their next match on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.
And the UST sparkplug refused to be intimidated by the taller Lady Spikers.
“It’s all about the heart to win because it’s already given that they are the taller team. We have to use our minds and hearts,” she said.
