Belen and the Lady Bulldogs drew strength from the NU fans among the 20,955 gate attendance at the Big Dome after moving to the cusp of reclaiming the UAAP title with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 victory over the Tigresses, who missed the services of star Angge Poyos late in the second set due to an ankle injury. UAAP: Advice from Jaja Santiago spurs Alyssa Solomon on

She has Jaja Santiago’s encouraging words to thank for that.
Following an eight-point game when NU lost its twice-to-beat advantage to Far Eastern University, Solomon continued to struggle with nine points on 8-of-29 attacking clip but the Lady Bulldogs still swept the Lady Tamaraws to book their third straight trip to the Finals. FULL STORY
Jonna Perdido, UST Tigresses vow to step up to save UAAP title bid
MANILA, Philippines — With Angge Poyos’ availability in Game 2 still uncertain due to an ankle injury, Jonna Perdido is determined to step up for the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses when they try to salvage their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball campaign against the National University Lady Bulldogs.
Perdido took matters into her own hands with 17 points and nine excellent receptions but it wasn’t enough to lift UST, which lost Poyos late in the second set, past NU, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, in Game 1 of the Finals before an ecstatic 20,955 crowd at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday. FULL STORY

UAAP: UST star Angge Poyos questionable for Finals Game 2
MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas has quite a problem on their hands at possibly the worst time ever.
Golden Tigresses coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes said after their Game 1 loss that there’s no assurance yet regarding Angge Poyos’ clearance to play for Game 2 of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament.
“There’s swelling [in the ankle] already but it’s not as bad as Eya’s (Laure) before when it immediately turned violet. The good thing though [the injury] isn’t in her jumping foot but it will affect her performance definitely,” said Reyes in Filipino after their 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 setback to National University. After having quiet performances in NU’s last two outings, Alyssa Solomon showed her top form again with 17 points from 14 attacks, three blocks and an ace to help the Lady Bulldogs pull ahead in the best-of-three Finals series.

UAAP men’s volleyball: NU sweeps UST, nears four-peat
MANILA, Philippines — National University inched a win closer to a historic fourth consecutive title after sweeping University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 26-24, 25-19, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball Finals on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Buds Buddin, who didn’t play in NU’s pair of elimination round losses to UST due to a fractured right hand, spelled the difference for the Bulldogs to get their first win over the Golden Spikers in their most important game of the year.
Buddin continued to sizzle with 16 points including the clutch back row attacks in the third set to lift NU on the cusp of becoming the first team to complete a ‘four-peat’ since UST, led by former setter Karl Dimaculangan, who is now the Lady Bulldogs deputy coach, achieved the feat in 2011. NU Lady Bulldogs, UST Tigresses open UAAP volleyball title series
This is a battle that has been waged for years on high school grounds. This time, National University (NU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) elevated their rivalry to the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball Final.
“It crossed our minds that if NU would win in the do-or-die game [against Far Eastern U], it’s going to be … high school all over again,” sophomore spiker Reg Jurado told the Inquirer during the Tigresses’ practice Thursday evening.
“I hope this time, it’s a good outcome,” she added. FULL STORY

UAAP: UST Tigresses ready to show maturity vs more experienced NU
MANILA, Philippines — The University of Santo Tomas Tigresses may be a bunch of UAAP women’s volleyball Finals first-timers but coach KungFu Reyes believes their experience in high school and pre-season have prepared them against the more experienced National University Lady Bulldogs.
UST, composed of young players led by super rookie Angge Poyos, has returned to the UAAP finals after five years, and standing in its way is NU, which made it to the UAAP Finals for the third straight time.
They collide in a best-of-three title series starting Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. FULL STORY
UAAP: Shaq Delos Santos grateful for another shot at title with UST
MANILA, Philippines — Fourteen years after steering the University of Santo Tomas to a UAAP title, Shaq Delos Santos–this time, as an assistant coach–is raring to help end the school’s championship drought in the Season 86 women’s volleyball finals.
Delos Santos was the last coach to steer UST to a championship as his squad led by Rhea Dimaculangan and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas swept La Salle in the championship series of Season 72 for the school’s 16th title.
He found himself back on the Tigresses’ turf with his role as part of coach KungFu Reyes’ staff playing an instrumental role in the team’s return to the finals after five years. FULL STORY
UAAP: Lady Bulldogs bracing for hunger-fueled Tigresses
As difficult as things have been for National University (NU) so far during its UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball campaign, the Lady Bulldogs know it won’t get any easier from here as they battle University of Santo Tomas (UST) for all the glory in the Finals.
“UST won’t back down, you can see its hunger when they play,” Lady Bulldogs star hitter Bella Belen said in Filipino after securing a seat to the Finals on Wednesday with a 25-13, 27-25, 25-15 bounce-back win against Far Eastern University (FEU). And Belen knows what she and the Lady Bulldogs have to do when they shoot for the crown starting on Saturday. FULL STORY
