MANILA, Philippines — Bella Belen was thrilled to hear National University’s faithful matching the energy of the University of Santo Tomas’ fans, who turned the Smart Araneta Coliseum like the Quadricentennial Pavilion with their cheers, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball finals on Saturday.

Belen and the Lady Bulldogs drew strength from the NU fans among the 20,955 gate attendance at the Big Dome after moving to the cusp of reclaiming the UAAP title with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 victory over the Tigresses, who missed the services of star Angge Poyos late in the second set due to an ankle injury. MANILA, Philippines — After struggling in the Final Four, Alyssa Solomon rediscovered her scoring touch to put National University on the cusp of claiming the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball title.

MANILA, Philippines — With Angge Poyos’ availability in Game 2 still uncertain due to an ankle injury, Jonna Perdido is determined to step up for the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses when they try to salvage their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball campaign against the National University Lady Bulldogs.

Perdido took matters into her own hands with 17 points and nine excellent receptions but it wasn’t enough to lift UST, which lost Poyos late in the second set, past NU, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, in Game 1 of the Finals before an ecstatic 20,955 crowd at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines—In a crowd majorly occupied by a sea of Yellow, the minority won.

The Araneta Coliseum was home to over 20,000 spectators Saturday night to witness the clash between University of Santo Tomas and National University in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball Finals.

MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas has quite a problem on their hands at possibly the worst time ever.

Golden Tigresses coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes said after their Game 1 loss that there’s no assurance yet regarding Angge Poyos’ clearance to play for Game 2 of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament.

“There’s swelling [in the ankle] already but it’s not as bad as Eya’s (Laure) before when it immediately turned violet. The good thing though [the injury] isn’t in her jumping foot but it will affect her performance definitely,” said Reyes in Filipino after their 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 setback to National University. National University moved within just a win of clinching the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball throne after dominating University of Santo Tomas, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, in Game 1 on Saturday at Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

After having quiet performances in NU’s last two outings, Alyssa Solomon showed her top form again with 17 points from 14 attacks, three blocks and an ace to help the Lady Bulldogs pull ahead in the best-of-three Finals series.

Buds Buddin, who didn’t play in NU’s pair of elimination round losses to UST due to a fractured right hand, spelled the difference for the Bulldogs to get their first win over the Golden Spikers in their most important game of the year.

Buddin continued to sizzle with 16 points including the clutch back row attacks in the third set to lift NU on the cusp of becoming the first team to complete a ‘four-peat’ since UST, led by former setter Karl Dimaculangan, who is now the Lady Bulldogs deputy coach, achieved the feat in 2011. MANILA, Philippines — Fourteen years after steering the University of Santo Tomas to a UAAP title, Shaq Delos Santos–this time, as an assistant coach–is raring to help end the school’s championship drought in the Season 86 women’s volleyball finals.

Delos Santos was the last coach to steer UST to a championship as his squad led by Rhea Dimaculangan and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas swept La Salle in the championship series of Season 72 for the school’s 16th title.

As difficult as things have been for National University (NU) so far during its UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball campaign, the Lady Bulldogs know it won’t get any easier from here as they battle University of Santo Tomas (UST) for all the glory in the Finals.

“UST won’t back down, you can see its hunger when they play,” Lady Bulldogs star hitter Bella Belen said in Filipino after securing a seat to the Finals on Wednesday with a 25-13, 27-25, 25-15 bounce-back win against Far Eastern University (FEU).
