MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo brought immense honor and pride to the Philippines by winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Paris after years of hard work and sacrifice all the while overcoming his personal battles.

More than competing against the top gymnasts in the world, Yulo had his battles off the mat, surrounding his world-class talent with doubts when his first Olympic stint in Tokyo three years ago didn’t end well coupled with his decision to part ways with longtime Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya and bring back his childhood mentor Aldrin Castañeda. Carlos Yulo’s golden moment in gymnastics and the sure medal finish of boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio have secured another first for the Philippines in its century-long Olympic participation.

Never has the country produced more than one medal in back-to-back Olympics until the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo edition three years ago, which saw weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz break through with the first gold medal and the ongoing Paris Games where Yulo won the men’s floor exercise.

But Yulo rewrote history on Sunday night, winning back-to-back gold medals in gymnastics after also ruling the men's vault. FULL STORY

Carlos Yulo shrugged off a sleepless night to win gymnastics gold in the men's vault at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, 24 hours after claiming the floor title for a piece of Philippines sporting history.

"It's crazy because last night I couldn't sleep. I was so hyped because I had won that gold medal on floor," the 24-year-old Yulo said.

"It still didn't sink in. This morning I was so sleepy, I didn't know what to do."

Armenia's Artur Davtyan took silver with Britain's Harry Hepworth just denying his compatriot and vault world champion Jake Jarman for the bronze. FULL STORY

“Dalawa na lang, hopefully, makuha na natin this time.”  FULL STORY
