UAAP: UE finally ends 40-game skid in women’s basketball

MANILA, Philippines—University of the East had quite a historic day on Sunday after beating La Salle, 65-47, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.

While the Lady Warriors’ victory served as their first win of the season, it also ended a 40-game losing spell in the UAAP that had spanned five years.

Jearzy Ganade spearheaded the victorious Lady Warriors with an all-around game of 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Aliyah Ronquillo commanded the offense, meanwhile, with 11 points and eight assists.

Luisa San Juan top scored for the Lady Archers with 14 points and five rebounds in the loss that sent them to 0-4. Patricia Mendoza finished with 10 points.

UP squeaks past FEU

University of the Philippines, meanwhile, eked out an 82-77 victory to improve to a 2-2 card in the standings.

Gilas women’s standout Louna Ozar turned in an exceptional double-double to the tune of 17 points and 11 rebounds with three steals to match. Achrissa Maw had the spotlight for UP, though, with a team-high 25 points alongside nine rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Shane Salvani had a big game for the Lady Tamaraws after stuffing the stat sheet with 28 points, six rebounds and three assists but to no avail. FEU dropped to 1-3 but not without Max de la Torre’s 11-point effort.

UP looks to sustain its winning ways when the Lady Maroons face Adamson on Saturday at Araneta Coliseum. The Lady Tamaraws, meanwhile, faces Ateneo exactly a week from now at the same venue.
