PBA ‘saddened’ by John Amores shooting incident

MANILA, Philippines–The PBA expressed sadness in the alleged shooting incident involving NorthPort’s John Amores in his home province of Laguna.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial’s comments, however, were short when the league released a statement Thursday, hours after Amores surrendered to authorities in Lumban, Laguna.

“This is a matter subject of investigation by the police, and we cannot comment on it. But we are saddened by such an unfortunate incident,” said Marcial.

Marcial politely refrained from making further remarks when reporters tried to press him during the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinal doubleheader at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Amores’ team, NorthPort, has yet to react on the matter, but it was made aware of the situation shortly after the incident took place Wednesday.

A police report said that Amores along with his younger brother had a heated argument with a male individual over a call in a basketball game. The two underwent inquest proceedings Thursday.

It is unknown the nature of game Amores played, but PBA rules prohibits its players from taking part in games unsanctioned by the league.

Amores’ involvement came two years after he ran amok during an NCAA game while playing for Jose Rizal University against College of St. Benilde.
