MANILA, Philippines—It was only a matter of time before Gilas Pilipinas’ young guns showed why they’re a big part of the basketball program’s future.
Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao and Mason Amos proved their worth in helping Gilas clobber Hong Kong in the second window of the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers on Sunday night at Mall of Asia Arena.
Tamayo had his best game for Gilas with a game-high 18 points on top of six rebounds and a steal.

“Coach Tim (Cone) always talks to me about what I should adjust with my game and being more mature and relaxed in the game,” said the 23-year-old Tamayo, who plays import for the Changwon LG Sakers in the Korean Basketball League (KBL), after the 93-54 win.
“I’m trying to improve on it and I’m blessed to have coach Tim as my coach in the national team. He’s really guiding me for improvement as a basketball player.”
Gilas improved to 4-0 in the qualifiers also thanks to the efforts of the reigning UAAP MVP Quiambao.
Quiambao collected eight points, five rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes after not playing in the victory over New Zealand on Thursday.

“I know my role and I’m thankful [that] an opportunity came so I just took advantage. I’m thankful for the coaches who gave me trust,” said Quiambao.
“Coach LA Tenorio talked to me when I didn’t get minutes in that New Zealand game. He reminded me to stay ready and I just stayed professional. Basketball is basketball, [it’s] nothing personal. For me, I just stayed ready so I’m thankful,” added the La Salle star.
Quiambao’s fellow Green Archers Mason Amos also played quality minutes with three points, two rebounds one assist and a block in 10 minutes of play.
