MANILA, Philippines — Joan Monares has emerged as one of the University of the Philippines’ go-to scorers, leading the Fighting Maroons’ hot 2-0 start in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

For the second straight game, UP turned to Monares, who erupted for 19 points built on 17 spikes and two aces, helping stun contender Far Eastern University, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23, on Wednesday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Monares believes her return from a left ankle injury that sidelined her in Season 85 \made her stronger and prepared her to lead the young Fighting Maroons this year.

University of the Philippines notched a second straight win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after taming Far Eastern University, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23, Wednesday night at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The Fighting Maroons improved to 2-0, with Joan Monares leading the Fighting Maroons again with 19 points from 17 attacks and two aces and  rookie Kianne Olango adding 17 points built on 13 attacks, three blocks and an ace.

“So far, it’s good. We tried something, and it worked. Let’s see if they can adapt more to the defensive system, then we’ll go from there. We’ll take it step by step, depending on the teams’ adjustments,” coach Benson Bocboc said.

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University made quick work of University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18, to stay unbeaten in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Dryx Saavedra led the balanced attack of the Tamaraws with 13 points, hitting 12 of his 25 attack attempts and an ace to tie four-time defending champion National University at 2-0 before their marquee match-up on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines —Lyann De Guzman and the Ateneo Blue Eagles are dedicating their UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball campaign to injured teammates Zel Tsunashima and JLo Delos Santos.

Despite falling to a 0-2 record in the absence of both players, the Blue Eagles pushed the defending champions National University Lady Bulldogs in the first set before losing, 23-25, 19-25, 15-25 loss on Wednesday at FilOIl EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

MANILA, Philippines — With Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon already expressing their intention to leave National University after UAAP Season 87, setter Lams Lamina is still undecided whether or not to follow suit.

Lamina has not thought about her plans after this season as she is focused on helping the Lady Bulldogs win a second consecutive title.

MANILA, Philippines–National University (NU) cruised to a second straight victory in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after dominating Ateneo, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15, on Wednesday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Alyssa Solomon dropped 12 points, 10 off attacks, as Vange Alinsug contributed 10 points to lift the Lady Bulldogs to a 2-0 start in their title-retention bid.

MANILA, Philippines — Zel Tsunashima will miss the remainder of UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament due to a broken tibia and fibula.

Tsunashima suffered the injury after a bad fall when she attempted for a block midway through the fifth set of the Blue Eagles’ 25-21, 25-20, 12-25, 15-25, 12-15 loss to the Adamson Lady Falcons on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion National University needed to surpass an acid test before staving off Ateneo, 23-25, 26-24, 27-25, 29-27, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament.

After the win, NU coach Dante Alinsunurin also took time to relish going up against his ex-players Vince Mangulabnan and Peter Torres on the sidelines. Mangulabnan is now the head coach of Ateneo with Torres as one of his assistants.
