MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University’s back-to-back losses served as a wake-up call to embrace its contender status in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

One important thing that the Lady Tamaraws realized during their two consecutive losses to the University of the Philippines and defending champion National University was that they are no longer the dark horse this year.

MANILA, Philippines — Mikole Reyes — sister of former La Salle middle blocker and PVL star Mika — continues to embrace the huge responsibility as the Lady Spikers’ main setter in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Reyes paced La Salle with 23 excellent sets on top of three points to lead La Salle past the University of the East, 25-12, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, for a 3-2 record with their first back-to-back wins of the season on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The younger Reyes admitted it’s not easy to embrace the pivotal role as a rookie setter but she’s getting there with the help of the Lady Spikers and coach Ramil De Jesus.

With chance to write a brand new story this UAAP volleyball season, the FEU Lady Tamaraws are determined not to waste it.

“This is a different story now in the new season. We think that we are not the same team as before so why would we squander this opportunity to perform well inside the court and show our potential and how we play?” Jean Asis said.

And the Lady Tamaraws have evidence to back it up after they fashioned a third straight victory in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament following a 23-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-10 victory over Adamson on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

After winning the first two sets, the Tamaraws needed to overcome an 8-15 start in the third and stop the Falcons from winning the set, 21-24.

FEU turned to Dryx Saavedra, Mikko Espartero, and substitute rookie Luis Miguel to force a deuce. Jude Aguilar kept Adamson afloat in the extended third only to commit a crucial attack error that put the former at match point, 30-29, before Doula Ndongala blocked Ahmed Tahiluddin for the win.

Playing eight total sets in winning its last two games, a different test awaits Far Eastern University (FEU) on Saturday when the Lady Tamaraws battle an Adamson side that is brandishing one of the fiercest weapons in Season 87 of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

And obviously for coach Tina Salak, they would want to come out triumphant in the 3 p.m. contest at Mall of Asia Arena and complete a character-building three-game test that spanned just over a week.

“We want to improve continuously,” Salak said in Filipino after a straight-sets win over winless University of the East (UE) on Wednesday. “We shouldn’t be falling short, we should improve, especially in handling small balls when facing other teams.”
