UAAP: La Salle strings up first streak, beats UE in women’s volleyball

La Salle notched its first back-to-back wins in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after a 25-12, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17 victory over University of the East on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Angel Canino led the Lady Spikers with 20 points made up of 14 attacks, three blocks and and the same number of aces, highlighted by 10 excellent digs and nine excellent receptions as they rose to a 3-2 record.

But even with the win, La Salle was visibly disappointed with how they moved past the winless Lady Warriors.
“You could clearly see our errors, especially in the second set,” Canino said. “So we really need to work on minimizing our errors each set because, as we always say, we can’t afford to relax no matter the result of the previous set.”

Alleiah Malaluan helped with 12 points, all but one from kills, Jyne Soreño made the most out of her playing time with 12 points, nine coming from the third set, and Amie Provido added 11 points.
“I just did my part as an older teammate. I’m always there for Shev [Laput] so that when coach Ramil [de Jesus] puts me in, I’m ready… Since that has always been my role, I really stood by the trust given to me,” Soreño said after filling in well for Laput.

Mikole Reyes executed her playmaking duties well with 23 excellent sets while Lyka de Leon did her part on the defense with high efficiency 17 out of 28 excellent sets and 16 out of 25 excellent digs.
“I’m still confident that I have more to show. Because in this game, my lapses as a setter were still evident, but I just have to trust myself and my teammates so that the progress continues,” Reyes said.
After allowing UE to even the game at one-set apiece, La Salle immediately buried the Warriors to a 13-1 hole the following frame.
La Salle was still in control in the fourth but UE was not far behind, 16-11, after a mid rally net touch challenge by the Warriors coaching staff was ruled successful. The Lady Spikers refused to commit the same mistakes and remained in control toward the endgame, 22-15, as Soreño landed an ace that forced UE to a timeout.
After a kill off the block by Khy Cepada, La Salle drew up a 4-0 run capped by back-to-back errors by Cepada.
The Lady Warriors absorbed a sixth straight loss in as many games even with the 17 points of Nessa Bangayan.
La Salle can make it a third straight facing rival Ateneo on Wednesday at the same Pasay City venue. UE continues to look for a breakthrough by facing the Blue Eagles on March 15 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
