MANILA, Philippines —Jose Rizal University and Adamson University lead the eight teams vying for two Sweet 16 slots in the Metro Manila qualifying leg of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) from Nov. 6 to 8 at Filoil Flying V Arena.
The Bombers and the Falcons will go up against University of the East and Mapua as well as Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (Isaa) Philippine Merchant Marine School, Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (MNCAA) Centro Escolar University, Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association’s (Uclaa) St. Francis College and National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities’ (Naascu) St. Clare.
PCCL chair Reynaldo Gamboa and Filoil Flying V Sports head Raffy Villavicencio said yesterday officials have signed an agreement with the Arena in San Juan, renewing their commitment to make it the league’s home for the sixth straight year.
Gamboa also said the Visayas and Mindanao legs held recently in Dumaguete City and Iligan City will be aired on Studio 23 along with the North-Central Luzon and South Luzon-Bicol qualifiers slated in November.
Five-time UAAP champion Ateneo secured an outright Sweet 16 berth along with UAAP finalist University of Santo Tomas, semifinalists National University and La Salle; NCAA finalists San Beda and Letran, Final Four teams San Sebastian and Perpetual Help.
Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (Cesafi) champion Southwestern University and runners-up University of Visayas and University of San Jose-Recoletos also advanced along with Mindanao leg winner Holy Trinity College of General Santos City and Visayas champion West Negros.
On Nov. 4 to 6, the top varsity teams from North and Central Luzon will fight for a Round of 16 seat in San Fernando, La Union, while South Luzon and Bicol squads will also seek a slot on Nov. 3 to 5 at Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum in Naga City. Jasmine W. Payo
