MANILA, Philippines – Chieffy Caligdong struck a goal late to push the Philippines past Vietnam 1-0 Tuesday in the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok.

Caligdong, who came in for James Younghusband in the 75th minute, scored on a left-footed strike in the 85th minute off a pass from Angel Guirado.

The Philippines, which bounced back after losing to host Thailand, 1-2, last Saturday, nailed an all-important win as it put itself in a good position for a top two finish.

The Azkals face Myanmar in its final game of the elimination round on Friday.

Vietnam had a good opportunity to equalize but keeper Ed Sacapaño was able to tip the ball as it hit the bar and out in the 88th minute.

Phil Younghusband would’ve easily given the Philippines an early 1-0 edge but muffed a golden chance after slipping at the last moment in the 12th minute.

The Azkals also proved their stunning 2-0 win over Vietnam in 2010 in the same tournament was no fluke.
