MANILA, Philippines—The 16-game losing skid has ended.
University of the Philippines finally registered a win, besting University of the East, 25-18, 25-15, 18-25, 25-27, 15-6, Sunday in the UAAP 75th women’s volleyball competition at the Arena in San Juan city.
The Lady Maroons regained composure in the fifth set after their 2-0 lead, then disposed of the Red Warriors on a fiery run.
Princess had 14 hits, including three services aces and the game-clincher while rookie Jay Aliyah Ong had a sterling debut with rookie-laden UP with 12 points.
Seven rookies helped the Lady Maroons clinch their first victory, who last won also against the Lady Warriors last year.
“The girls were very determined, the rookies are very promising, they were very motivated,” said Jarod Hubalde, who was the same head coach who helped UP win the last time out.
UP just was a set away from triumph after a sterling start, but UE just did not want to go down that easily by racking up the next two sets.
Sarina Faith Bulan led the pesky Lady Warriors 17 points built around five service aces, while Leuseht Dawis chipped in 10 markers.
