NU wins 2nd straight, Ateneo unscathed in UAAP women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines—Unscathed Ateneo dominated a hapless University of Santo Tomas, 25-13, 25-16, 25-17, Sunday in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan city.

Alyssa Valdez was at her usual best with 16 points, while skipper Dzi Gervacio unloaded six of her 13 points from service aces for the Lady Eagles.

With the victory, the last year’s finalists improved to its best start since joining the league in 1978 at 3-0, while the Tigresses suffered their second setback early.

We played as a team, not individual.  Sana lagi ganiyan ang laro namin,” said a satisfied Lady Eagles coach Roger Gorayeb.

Meanwhile, National University turned back University of the East, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, for its second straight victory.

Myla Pablo dropped a career-high 22 hits, Dindin Santiago added 16 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who have already equaled their total win output last season.

Sarina Faith Bulan tallied 11 points while Leuseht Dawis had seven hits for UE, the lone winless team in the field at 0-3.

UST got a better result in the men’s tournament as Salvador Depante dropped 17 points tow the Tiger Spikers to a 25-20, 26-24, 25-20 win over Adamson.

Meanwhile, Ysrael Marasigan fired 20 hits to help Ateneo notch its first win, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16, over University of the Philippines.
