NCAA: Knights, Blazers near coach choice

Half of last season’s coaches won’t be seen in the sideline next NCAA season.

Letran and St. Benilde have narrowed down their coaching options over the holiday break as they begin laying the foundation for their campaign next season in the NCAA.

The Knights have trimmed their options to Caloy Garcia and Larry Albano, while the Blazers are eyeing either Mike Buendia or Gabby Velasco, several reliable sources said.

Letran was expected to make an announcement during the holiday season, but school officials decided to take their sweet time before naming the replacement for coach Louie Alas.

The names of Buendia and Velasco cropped up last month, after the resignation of coach Richard del Rosario.

Other NCAA teams also in search of a coach are San Sebastian and San Beda, whose coach Ronnie Magsanoc also resigned last month. Mapua is set to name Fortunato “Atoy” Co as replacement for Chito Victolero.

San Sebastian reportedly parted ways with backer Dennis Pineda, which meant that interim coach Allan Trinidad was also released. In the meantime, sources said coach Turo Valenzona will handle the Stags’ practices.

Garcia and Buendia are both assistant coaches at Rain or Shine in the PBA.
