MANILA, Philippines — Twenty four countries have confirmed their participation in the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championship hosted by the Philippines.
From powerhouse China, North Korea, to war-torn Syria and other Middle Eastern countries, former Soviet territories and members of Southeast Asia, all are expected to send nothing but their best youth boxers to the tournament.
There will be 10 weight divisions — from 49kgs light flyweight to 91kgs super heavyweight — for the boxers ranging from 17-18 years of age.
The Philippines is hopeful it could field in bets in six division, according to ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson in a statement.
But aside from making sure the hosts put on a competitive stand, the ABAP officials are also swamped with planning an event of such magnitude.
“This is fast becoming a logistical challenge but we are meeting it head-on,” said ABAP president Ricky Vargas. “We’re looking forward to a great tournament.”
Picson, meanwhile, admits this poses a “logistical nightmare,” as posted on his Twitter account (@EdCaster).
“But (we are) getting lots of support frm SBMA, PLDT & many others. So gratifying two know there are people who realize this is a national effort,” Picson also said.
The event is set from March 10-17 at the Subic Gym.
