Polo aces coming for Romero Cup

Two Southeast Asian Games medalists head the foreign cast vying for honors in the 1st Romero Polo Cup on March 10 at Alabang Country Club.

Brothers Alyawatt and Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha, both members of the Thailand team that bagged the bronze in the 2007 SEA Games, are set to see action in the high-goal match that drew a mix of veteran and young international players.

“It’s going to be a tough tournament since seasoned players from around the globe will see action,” said tournament host Mikee Romero, the chief executive officer of Harbour Centre. “For sure, it’s going to be a rugged match since a lot is at stake in the event.”

Also seeing action in the event, also dubbed as the Sultan Cup, are Lucas Lujan and Miguel Diaz of Argentina, Isidro Olivas of Mexico, Jake Gordon of Britain, Fil-Am brothers Anthony and Adrian Garcia and 2007 Philippine team captain Antonio Veloso.

Jun Juban, the Filipino Hollywood producer and Alabang Country Club president, heads the low-goal players together with son Santi, Jim Donovan, Freddie and Sonny Borromeo and Jun Eusebio.

The Srivaddhanaprabha brothers are the sons of Vichai, the godfather of polo in Asia who also hosts the All Asia Cup and bankrolled the construction of the first professionally lighted polo stadium in Asia in Bangkok.

“The presence of a prominent Thai family makes the event more glamorous,” said Romero.
