Highly regarded Fil-Spanish striker Javier Patino is poised to leave his Spanish second division team Cordoba and take his talent to Thai Premier League club Buriram United, which is also seeing action in the AFC Champions League, Asia’s Premier club football competition.
A source close to the player confirmed yesterday that the former Cordoba striker was scheduled to fly to Thailand to undergo a medical before signing with Buriram.
News of Buriram’s acquisition of Patino already leaked Saturday night through the Thai Premier League Twitter account, but it wasn’t until yesterday that the Fil-Spanish striker made known his impending move to Southeast Asia.
Patino is set to make his debut for the Philippine national team in the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers, where the Azkals are looking to top the group and claim a spot in the tournament next year.
Azkals coach Michael Weiss is excited over Patino’s impending stint with the team, saying he would provide the sharpness on attack that the Azkals lacked in some very important matches last year.
Cordoba loaned Patino to struggling Spanish second division side Xerez last month, before eventually releasing him a few days ago.
Playing for Cordoba, Patino scored 10 goals in 52 matches, helping the team come within a victory of making the Spanish premier group.
