Treat Huey and first-time partner Jerzy Janowicz brushed off two match-points and struck down highly rated players Alexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares of Brazil, 7-5, 1-6, 12-10, Friday to reach the men’s doubles finals of into the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
Huey and Polish Janowicz, unseeded in the tournament and gaining everyone’s attention with their string of rousing victories, fired away to take first set before the 16th-ranked Soares and 22nd-ranked Peya recovered their wits and forced the deciding tiebreak.
Soares and Peya reached match point at 9-8, and then again at 10-9, but Huey and Janowicz fought off with three straight points and posted the win after 79 minutes.
They next face top seeded twins Bob and Mike Bryan, the most successful men’s doubles tandem in their generation with a career golden slam under their belts.
The Bryans, though, were not as dominating in the Indian Wells tilt and were dragged to a tiebreak before putting away Mexican Santiago Gonzales and American Scott Lipsky, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
