Joy in doubles, tears in singles for Jeson
Jeson Patrombon and his Uzbek partner Sergey Shipilov stormed into the boys’ doubles quarterfinals but the Filipino’s singles campaign came to a shocking halt Wednesday in the Osaka Mayor’s Cup-World Super Juniors tennis championships in Japan. It will be the first doubles quarterfinals for Patrombon as he and Shipilov hurdled Australians Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. The fourth seeds will next take on Koreans Lee Jean-moon and Woo Chung-hyo, who whipped Japan’s Ryota Kishi and Yutaro Matsuzaki, 6-3, 6-0. The doubles win somehow eased the pain of the 17-year-old Patrombon’s surprising defeat to an unseeded German in the singles. Constantin Christ pulled off a 7-5, 6-2 upset over the fourth-seeded Patrombon, who is trying to make it to the world’s top 10 at the end of the year. “Every time Jeson had the German down, Christ comes up with spectacular shots and passing shots on the run,” said Patrombon’s coach Manny Tecson. It was the German’s day.”
