Orcollo advances; Souquet nips Alcano

JAKARTA–Dennis Orcollo dumped a pair of Indonesian foes and Jeff de Luna stunned compatriot and World No. 2 Lee Van Corteza as they towed a six-man Philippine contingent advancing to the knockout stage of the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool 10-Ball Challenge Friday at the Mal Taman Aggrek here.   Another Filipino bet, Ronnie Alcano, wasn’t as fortunate as he bowed to an in-form Ralf Souquet of Germany, 4-6.   Seeking to redeem himself after a lackluster showing in the World Pool Championship last month, Orcollo shut out Jeffrey Andrianto, 6-0, before surviving an upset-conscious Irsal Nasutio, 6-4, for a place in the last 16.   Aside from his 6-2 conquest of Corteza, De Luna also crushed Indonesia’s Samuel, 6-3.   Trailing 1-3, Alcano committed a crucial blunder when he missed a routine shot on the 10-ball allowing Soquet to take advantage.   Alcano, a former double world champion, did show flashes of brilliance, winning a tight safety battle to win the seventh rack.   With momentum on his side, Alcano trimmed the lead, 4-5, before Soquet put the game to bed with an impressive break-and-runout in the 10th frame.   Carlo Biado, Antonio Lining, Alex Pagulayan and Jundel Mazo joined Orcollo and Corteza in the next round, after scoring two wins apiece.   Biado subdued Indonesia’s Bambang Peodjiono, 6-2, and Jimmy Jusman, 6-3, while Lining coasted to victories over Indonesia’s Adi Purnomo (6-3) and Raymond Cruz of Canada (6-0).   On the comeback trail, Pagulayan blanked Joni Chandra of Indonesia, 6-0, and compatriot Victor Arpilleda, 6-2, while Mazon proved too sharp for Indonesians Yusuf Rianto, 6-3, and Yoni Rachmanto, 6-1.
