Top seed Wesley So settled for a draw with Yaroslav Zherebukh in the fifth round Sunday night, but kept top spot in the all-Grandmaster 2017 US Chess Championship in St. Louis, Missouri.
So, who handled black, raised his total to 3.5 points, just half a point ahead of Yaroslav, Daniel Naroditsky, four-time US champion Hikaru Nakamura, Varuzhan Akobian and Ray Robson.
Akobian and Robson subdued Samuel Shankland and Alexander Shabalov, respectively, to catch up with Naroditsky and Nakamura.
His third draw in the 11-round tournament pulled down the Philippine-born So’s live rating to Elo 2821.7, good for No. 2 behind world champion Magnus Carlsen of Sweden (2838). —ROY LUARCA
