Cherry Rondina and Bernadeth Pons of Petron Sprint 4T asserted their mastery of the sands when they defeated Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain of Generika-Ayala A, 21-12, 21-8, Sunday night to capture the Belo Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup at Sands at SM by the Bay inside the Mall of Asia complex.

Bang Pineda and Ces Molina of Petron XCS settled for bronze after downing Danika Gendrauli and Jackie Estoquia of Sta. Lucia, 10-21, 21-14, 15-9, earlier.

Defending champion Jovelyn Gonzaga and teammate Maica Morada of Cignal HD-A could only place fifth as they survived Mylene Paat and Janine Marciano of Cignal HD-B, 21-15, 26-28, 15-11.

Training only three days before the start of the tournament, Arbastro and Sarte relied on sheer feel of the court to fashion out the win with the summer sun beating down on their backs.

Arbastro’s original partner backed out and he had to strike a rapport with Sarte.
“We just decided to have fun and enjoy the game,” said Arbastro.

“I came from Davao that’s why we only had three days to train,” said Sarte.
